From Startup to Service: What a Remote Clinic Taught Us About Purpose in Dentistry

From Startup to Service: What a Remote Clinic Taught Us About Purpose in Dentistry

If you're preparing to open your own dental practice, you're likely focused on floorplans, financing, and team-building. All critically important. But I want to share something a little different with you today — something that speaks to the "why" behind it all.

A few months ago, I joined four of our high-level consulting clients on a mission trip to the hills of the Dominican Republic. We set up a fully functioning dental clinic in one of the most remote, underserved areas imaginable.

In just four days, we cared for 246 patients. No electricity. No air conditioning. Just a passion to serve and the systems that make service scalable — even halfway across the world.

What a Startup Dentist Can Learn From a Makeshift Dental Clinic

This wasn’t just a feel-good trip (though it certainly was that too). It reminded me — and the doctors who joined us — that the heart of a successful practice isn’t just systems or metrics. It’s people. And purpose.

Here’s what we took away from those four powerful days:

Clear logistics create freedom — Even in an unfamiliar country, with limited resources, we were able to provide exceptional care because of the systems we brought with us. The same applies to your startup practice. Get your systems in place now and you’ll be free to focus on people — not paperwork.

Your team is everything — The doctors on this trip didn’t do it alone. They worked shoulder-to-shoulder with spouses, assistants, and translators. That kind of teamwork doesn’t happen by accident. It starts with intentional hiring and culture-building — from day one.

Dentistry is a calling — We all got into this to make a difference. But somewhere between student loans and lease agreements, it’s easy to lose sight of that. Trips like this are a soul-level reminder of what it’s all really about.

A Moment of Gratitude (and an Invitation)

I want to publicly thank the incredible doctors who joined me: Dr. Mark and Dusti, Dr. Ben and Ella, Dr. Crystal, and Dr. Shane — along with my amazing wife Lisa — for giving up a full week of their lives to serve a small village in the mountains.

This kind of impact is possible when your practice is built on a strong foundation. That’s what we help doctors create — a practice that’s financially sound, personally fulfilling, and positioned to serve.

If that sounds like the kind of practice you want to build, you’re in the right place.
